Generation Cycle - Jersey Sport’s new initiative

Generation Cycle is Jersey Sport’s new initiative to instil young riders with the confidence and ability to ride for life. A vision that they hope to realise having received funding from The Bosdet Foundation.

The £10,000 grant from The Bosdet Foundation will go towards the establishment of a new way of approaching how to get youngsters mobile. Working with schools initially in the west of the Island, Jersey Sport will provide a series of fun and challenging coaching sessions to develop young riders in school year 6 with all equipment provided. The sessions will build positive experiences, develop confidence and technical ability in balance and coordination – as well as developing a better understanding of the health benefits cycling can bring.

‘Our mission at Jersey Sport is to reduce physical inactivity by 10% by 2025.’ Said Catriona McAllister of Jersey Sport. ‘Currently only 19% of children reach recommended activity levels and 1 in 3 children are obese by the end of year 6.

‘Internationally structured coaching programmes for young riders have been extremely successful and have seen increases in the number of young riders developing active habits for life, schools adapting and becoming cycle friendly, new cycle paths being opened due to increased participation and increases in the number of riders attending academies, clubs and associations.

‘We aim to deliver fun, progressive, positive cycling experiences for young people to enable them to benefit at school and throughout their adult lives. Coaching is fundamental to ensure safety and confidence and the Generation Cycle programme, delivered by qualified coaches, will provide schools with all the support and training they need to instil cycling as a sport within the school environment.’

Jersey Sport’s Generation Cycle structured training and support programme will be implemented for five primary schools in autumn 2019. Alan Le Pavoux of The Bosdet Foundation commented, ‘The vision of The Bosdet Foundation is to use our funding to create positive changes in our community. We are excited to have the opportunity to support Generation Cycle as we recognise the long-term health and environmental benefits this programme can achieve. We are looking forward to seeing the changes in behaviour that this program creates and the impact it will have.’
